I did this through the variac I'd recently acquired and that seems to have blown it, I'm sorry to say. Not the variac so much as my false assumption that a variac is simply a jumbo-sized rheostat that when turned up to maximum could only output no more than its input. Big mistake! I reckon I applied about 10-12% more than the smps's design voltage of 230V to it and now something else has gone phut. No smoke, but a distinct sizzling noise that lasted about 5 seconds before petering out. So the question now is, what type of component is least likely to be able to tolerate this marginal over-voltage? thanks, cd.

Only the biggest sound system would use much more current, and if you have some enormous sound system, or a winch that you use all the time, stop using those things until you figure out what is wrong with the car.   My brother bought a new car and the dealer replaced the altenator, the starter motor, and the battery twice, to make the car start right. But the dealer guys didn't know what they were doing.   I took it to Sears and they found the problem in less than 5 minutes. It was a dirty connection between the positive battery cable and the starter solenoid (which also powered t he starter motor.) It cost NOTHING in parts to fix, and they charged me nothing to fix it, perhaps becaue I was buying a new battery, but it would have been very cheap anyhow. If it's not that connection, it might be another one. You're battery cables could not have 1.5 ohms resistance, but where they are connected might.   If a battery post gets hot when you're trying to start the car, there is a bad connection between that post and the cable connecter that's attached to it. Hot does not mean it's carrying a lot of electricity. It means it's having trouble carrying the electricity it needs. Because of a bad connection that wastes energy making heat.   People spend a lot of time t hinking abou tthe big components and less time thinking about the wires in between (which I gather you have checked) and even less time thinking about the connections of the wres in between. Check them all, especially those that carry substantial current.   They fixed it, but every time I left the light on for a few hours, the problem would start again. At firstr I took the cable off and cleaned everything, like the Sears guy did, but then I learned just ot rotate the cable end on the stud, 10 or 20^ and then rotate it back.   Finally I got a buzzer that buzzes when I left the headlights or parking lights on and the problem went a way entirely.

It's a digital mulimeter with 20 possible settings, but nothing for testing batteries. Some have a lighted screen when the button is pushed but others don't.   I see it does have a place for testing PNP and NPN transistors, out of the circuit. Basic testing of a transistor is not that compllicated and I suppose it's wired correctly.   They sell fancier meters up to 30, maybe 40 dollars. I bought one for 25 or 30 which includes a temp probe, capacitance meaurement, a button to hold the reading if I can't see it when I'm measuring, autmatic turn off, etc.   Even Home Depot and Lowes have the 3 dollar meter, probably better than that, for 20 dollars, though I didn't look close enough to see if tests transistors.   I hate to steer business away from American manufacturers, but I actually don't know where Fluke and other good brands are made (in the US?) But in my case, I already have American made meters, and I have so litle use** for something to measure capacitance or temperature, that I would never buy a name brand model. **Reed that, I've had the meter for 5 years and never measured either.

Peak also rips you off as the ones from china combine the resistor/capacitor/inductors with the transistor/simiconductor test. The ones I see advertised form Peak have seperate units.   I have one that was just the circuit board without the case. Put it in a box myself. It usualy works very well. It will sometimes get confused on some parts. Some transistors will read funny, but if you change the leads around they will read correctly. That is all in some documments I found on the internet about them.

Turntable and cassette. this is not a super uper duper hifi system like Thoprens, Nak, and all that but it isn't bad. What makes it special is the vertical turntable. And the guy's Woman is in love with it.   I reworked the amp because you can't get a reliable STKSI1125HD output IC. It now hasd a pair of LM3886s in it and they are working fine. It is just a matter of the odds and ends now. The TT works but the belts are really loose. the cassette capstan belt turned to mush so I don't even have one to measure. The string trick would be hard on this deck, I would realy like to just buy a belt it for it and be done with it.   I have been to lpgear and they want a little too much. Ifthey were the only game in town we would pay it but they only have two of the TT belts, it has three. There is the one that turns the platter, the one that drives the arm and the one that lifts the arm. They got the platter belt and one other, I don't even know which one it is at this time.   And the cassette drive, ugh. Any ideas ? Advice ?

Advice ?   In Baltimore the only place to get belts is Baynesville Electronics. My perfect phone machine needed one or two belts every 5 or 8 years, and it was worth paying whatever was charged.   IIRC, their belt display is not what it used to be, but I'm sure everything is available by mail, that is, on the web. The display may have had a reference book saying what things used what model belt, but I had to go buy dimensions instead. If not exact, get the shorter one. They probably stretch quite a bit but they don't get shorter.
